Carlisle Blues Festival

Blues in Britain has written a review of the festival and although Storm Warning only get 4 lines, they are very nice lines so our thanks go to the reviewer Norma Victor. Alan White from the Early Blues website www.earlyblues.com  (it's not just early blues and its a great site) took some pictures, see below. Another good northern based blues website reviewed the Carlisle Festival. Blues in the North West website www.bluesinthenorthwest.com  This is what Lionel Ross said about Storm Warning;

Saturday Evening: The evening session was opened by Storm Warning, another relatively unknown band, who significantly enhanced their reputation with a beautifully delivered set. The fine, husky vocals of Steve Norchi were enhanced by Bob ‘Mad Dog’ Moore on guitar and a highly effective rhythm section of Derek White on bass guitar, Roger Willis on drums and keyboard player, Ian Salisbury.

Storm Warning's comment: Not sure we would agree with 'relatively unknown band' bit but it's all relative as Lionel said - compared to the Beatles or The Rolling Stones, we guess we are. Anyway thanks to Lionel for the very nice words. Steve's 'husky vocals' was due to him having a cold but suits the Blues.

We understand that a band from Russia are going to be playing ‘Bullets’ in their live set and this will be interesting to hear if they ever record it. Here’s part of their message to us;

Sergey from Samara Blues club says;

The music from your album "Breaking Out" is so crasy bluesy! (Sorry for my English ) And the first song - Bullets - very... very ... I Like it!
For populate you group & songs in our city, my blues band tryes to play this song (Bullets).

We'll have to add Russia to our touring plans.

Storm Warning on the Classic Rock Cover CD

The October issue of Classic Rock magazine  had Storm Warning's 'Hard To Be A Man' track on the cover CD along with Joe Bonamassa, Oli Brown and Megadeth!

"Soulful gut-bucket groove that’s half hard times, half good-time-all-the-time…..they delve deep into breezy jazz, fiery rock or smoky R&B, but the blues always call them back.” Classic Rock magazine

Here is one of the  reviews on Something Real;

STORM WARNING - “Something Real” (Pete Sargeant )   www.fairhearing.co.uk

A second album from this line up following the well-received 'Breaking Out' set, with the classic drums/bass/guitar/keys/harp instrumentation to draw upon ; inspired by rock and blues master figures (bassist Derek White runs a roots cd supply firm) the best thing about this band is that they are not modelled on a particular artist or band and furthermore they write a lot of own material.

Harp and vocal man Stu Maxwell was kind enough to co-star at my band's tribute to Junior Wells earlier this year, alongside John O'Leary and if you want an example of his skill on the reeds try his take on 'Nothing But Smoke' included here, as cool as the modern blues can get. There is nothing on this disc that the band cannot deliver live on stage, which is often down to the nimble rhythm section (Roger Willis on drums) ; Ian Salisbury could pass for John McVie but plays keys in this line up. Bob Moore plays fluid guitar but rarely sounds like a Clapton imitator – hear his steady lines on starting cut 'On The Road', a blues travelogue if ever there was one. Hear them skip into 'Blues 101' with Maxwell using a dirty harmonica tone, what a great jazzy feel and unusual chord changes. A soulful cruisin' sound rolls 'Something Real' along like a riverboat, the guitar sings and leaves plenty of spaces, beautiful ! 'Long Ride' has a very cool keyboard part and an edgy beat.

This group sounds pro, looks pro and completely avoids sterility by taking care with their material – how easy it would be for them to do all the cliched numbers that every band does. But they have their own style which has the potential to take their appeal way beyond a 'blues audience'

Storm Warning at Darlington

On the first visit to the Darlington R&B Club, Storm Warning packed out the club and the band seem to make a big impression on the crowd. A great response and hopefully be back in Darlington next year. Pictures from the gig below;

Thanks Bottleneck Blues Club

Storm Warning played the Bottleneck Blues Club at the Roffen in Rochester to a packed club. Recently numbers at the club haven't been so good and they hadn't had such a crowd since Ian Siegal played sometime ago. So thanks to everyone for turning out on a Tuesday night and of course thanks to Richard Dobney the organiser for booking the band. This is what he said in his email after the gig;

"Storm Warning presented a beautifully crafted set, weaving an intoxicating mix of the traditional with jazzier and rockier elements to keep momentum through to the inevitable encore. They've certainly hit the nail on the head in designing this set of, principally, original material and this fresh approach, expertly executed by a great team of musicians, was more than appreciated by the members, indeed the feedback received, both at the event and follow up e-mail, has been quite phenomenal!"

New Review

The debut album 'Breaking Out' still continues to attract attention. We had an email from a new friend in the US, John Gibson. Visit this blues blog to read his review of 'Breaking Out.' http://bluesreview.blogspot.com

Rawa Blues Festival Poland

Storm Warning played the Rawa Blues Festival in Poland on 6th October and were very well received by the Polish audience. The band had extensive media coverage before and during the festival. The large crowd took the Storm Warning's music as they played a rocking set which was recorded for TV. The band shared the bill with Janvia Magness or the Ayslum Street Spankers. Both were great on and off stage. Our thanks go to Ired Dudek for his superb organising of the festival and his hospitality. Also thanks to Martyna and Magda our guides or looked after us, radio DJs Ryszard Gloger and Przemek Draheim and all the Polish people we met and who have emailed us with their kind words.

Storm Warning on a US Sampler

Network Pacific Record company based in Eureka, California  chose a Storm Warning track to go onto their Blues sampler cd. After hearing Breaking Out this is what they said about the band

"Your tunes are very interesting (such a nice change from the standard 12 bar "sounded like all the others" demos). Great writing, arrangements, and musicianship. We were taken with the last tune on your cd. It is one of the most unique blues cuts we have listened to."

The last track being 'Whisky Blues' is on the cd amongst bands from the US and Europe. The cd is available across the US. To buy the cd visit www.networkpacificrecords.com
