A short break took place where there was a rush to the bar before Roadhouse got underway playing a lively set of songs, many featured on their acclaimed CD ‘Blues Highway’. Those in the audience who had brought their instruments were by now champing at the bit to get on stage. First on was Colin McHugh ( he did all the printing for the festival) and his 16 year old son Sean (he’s got bottle) both playing guitar with Colin on vocals. They whipped through versions of ‘All Along the Watchtower’, nearer to Hendrix than Dylan and the aptly titled 'Born to be Wild' with some exciting and wild guitar playing from Colin. Not exactly blues but both numbers brought rapturous applause. MC, Gary Boner of Roadhouse invited on to the stage a group of musicians who had never met before, ably backed by Roger, the Roadhouse drummer (only common dominator all the way through). |
Guitars and bass jammed along to Crossroads with some good harp playing. This was followed by others including Woolfie who played sax and sang (not at the same time) holding everyone together in a stomping version of ‘Sweet Home Chicago’. Blues band Moondog’s guitarist (and many other bands) Derrick Tims turned up on his way to a gig and took to the stage with organiser Derek White. With slide in hand DT started on his own and then brought in DW and Roger playing ‘Josephine’ and ‘Little Red Rooster’. Roadhouse finished the lunchtime session to an appreciative crowd. Not an easy thing to do to host a jam session and they did it competently. All in all a very good jam session and workshop with a couple of acoustic enthusiasts getting some further workshop tuition form Papa George during the afternoon.
"We all enjoyed the guitar workshop, jam and thought everybody who had the nerve to get up on stage were good."
